ITV Player
A contribution to the team rebuilding ITV Player, combining Drupal 7 with a JavaScript front end. Working through Artetecha Ltd, I focused on Drupal engineering within a project where performance, caching, and testing mattered.
Engineering a viewing experience
In 2012 I worked on the team developing a new version of ITV Player. The application combined a Drupal 7 platform with a JavaScript front end to support the broadcaster’s online viewing experience.
My role in the team
I joined the project through Artetecha Ltd as a Senior Drupal Engineer, working alongside ITV’s in-house team. My contribution was to Drupal engineering within the wider application, developed collaboratively using Scrum and test-driven development.
Performance targets and caching were central to the work. A viewing platform needs the systems behind its interface to respond reliably, and the team’s engineering practices had to support that requirement as changes were made.
Experience that carries forward
The project brought together content management, a JavaScript interface, and the demands of a widely used media service. It is part of the foundation of my approach to web applications: consider the interface and the systems that support it together, and make testing part of delivery.
This is an account of my contribution to the 2012 ITV Player team. It does not describe ITV’s current streaming service.
